ACL Knee Injury | Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury

Definition

An ACL Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury is a frontal cruciate (KROO-she-ate) ligament tear in your knee. This ligament is a tough, dense composition made of connective bands of tissue that attach across one bone to another and stabilize the connection of the knee joint.  An ACL torn ligament injury may make your knee feel unbalanced or loose-fitting, and your knee may give way during twisting or pivoting motions or fail in keeping the body balanced and upright

Cause

ACL knee injuries or tears often happen during sports activities such as football, soccer and basketball. But any sudden movement or change in direction, twisting or over stretching of the knee as the foot is rigidly set on the floor may tear the ligament. Movements that initiate a forceful twist or a turn of the knee while placing the energy of your full weight on it can also advance to a torn meniscus, a cartilage tear in the knee which increases joint problems. For the elderly, a degenerative condition of the knee may be a cause of a torn meniscus. Nearly half of those injured with an ACL knee tear will develop knee osteoarthritis even for some who have had ligament surgery. With osteoarthritis the smooth surface of the joint cartilage will grind down and deteriorate.

Symptoms

The moment of an ACL tear a cracking sound may take place with harsh pain, knee swelling and weight bearing unsteadiness.
